HOW TO SEW A ZIPPER STEP-BY-STEP

Before we get started, keep in mind that these instructions apply to standard separating and non-separating zippers, but not invisible zippers. For invisible zippers, see our previous post, "How To Sew An Invisible Zipper." Now, let's take a look at those steps:

1. Pin The Zipper In Place

Place your fabric “right” side up and place your zipper face down along the edge. Pin or clip in place. Make sure your zipper is the length of the fabric edge. If you can’t find one the correct length, aim for longer rather than shorter.

2. Stitch The First Side

Use a zipper foot on your sewing machine to sew the zipper tape to the fabric. Using a straight stitch, sew alongside the zipper teeth.

TIP: PULL THE ZIPPER SLIDER ABOUT HALFWAY DOWN SO YOU DON'T RUN INTO IT WHEN YOU BEGIN SEWING. ZIP IT BACK UP BEFORE YOU REACH THE SLIDER AT THE HALFWAY POINT.

3. Pin The Second Side

Pin your unsewn side of the zipper to your second piece of fabric. Do this the same as the first side of your zipper: place the fabric right side up, and the zipper face down on it.

4. Stitch The Second Side

Sew the second side like you did the first, starting from the bottom this time (near the bottom stop). Be sure to maintain the same distance from the zipper teeth that you used on the first side.

5. Top Stitch (Optional)

For a more finished look, you can add a line of top stitching to the zipper and fabric. Turn your project over so it is facing right-side up with the zipper showing slightly between the two pieces of fabric. Start from the zipper pull at the top, about 1/4" away from the teeth, and sew downward. Repeat on both sides.

That's all there is to it! This simple method is great for installing basic zippers on items like pouches, jackets and more. Save the above steps (plus handy illustrations!) by printing or downloading our free how-to guide at the bottom of this page.

HOW TO SEW A ZIPPER FAQS

Frequently Asked Questions

Can You Sew A Zipper Without A Zipper Foot?

Yes, it is possible to sew a zipper using a standard zipper foot. However, we recommend using a zipper foot in most cases, especially if you're new to working with zippers. A zipper foot is designed to let you sew very closely to the zipper teeth, which is much harder to achieve with a standard foot.

Can You Cut A Zipper To Size?

If a zipper is too long, you can cut it to your desired size—you'll just have to replace the zipper stops to prevent the slider from coming off. For non-separating zippers, cut off the bottom end of the zipper; for separating zippers, cut off the top. Replace the zipper top and bottom stops as needed. If you're shortening a metal zipper, be sure to remove a few of the zipper teeth before you cut. For more detailed instructions, see our previous post, "How To Shorten A Metal Zipper."

What Size Zipper Do I Need?

It depends on your project! You'll want to choose the zipper that best matches the weight of your material and meets your project's strength requirements. #2 and #3 zippers are considered lightweight, #4.5 and #5 are medium-weight and zippers size #7 and above are considered heavy-weight. For a more in-depth look at zipper sizing with project examples and a to-scale size chart, check out our Zipper Size Chart post.
